Not for the Thin-Skinned Mamas

June 11, 2010

Thanks to K for showing me this blog, Uncensored Motherhood.

I think.

I mean, it’s raunchy, it’s gritty, it’s a little gross. That is – it’s real.

The Julie Andrews side of me really wants to look the other way and go sing with some animated bluebirds after reading this.

Fun Online Shopping: Child Therapy Toys

May 25, 2010

I was at a local toy store and got taken with a basket of little plastic babies as a great gift for a little girl turning three.

Problem: All of the babies were WHITE.

It’s not that I was trying to be PC or Guilty Liberal or anything (FYI, I’m white, and so is the little girl). It’s just that a basket of white babies looks… unreal to me. Reminds me too much of some kind of disturbed Aryan fantasy. What can I say? I grew up in LA. So I went online. (Sorry, Local-yokels…)

Homie toys

Homies for Sale

And I found a much more globally realistic baby set at Child Therapy Toys – along with some other fun things – like a set of Egyptian figures, with a pyramid – and some Indian goddesses – and HOMIES.

Yep. Homies.

I don’t really understand why there is a set of miniature “homies.” There aren’t miniature gangs or anything. Check it out for yourself and let me know if you have a theory about how homies help play therapists doing therapy with young kids…

Shopping Safe: Great Website for Busy Parents (and friends)

June 5, 2008

Too busy and tired to hunt down bath toys, pacifiers, milk storage containers, dinner ware, teethers, bottles, nipples, and everything else your child will chew that is phalate and BPA free?

Try The Soft Landing, a site I just heard about and had to pass along. Yeah, I know, it’s not shopping local, but shopping local right now, with high gas prices and this heavy heat, can be grueling on your energy costs… as in, I’m trying not to drive too far in any direction so that I conserve gas and avoid the sweating in the car)… I also like the samplers offered – like the “Go BPA Free Teether Sampler” – what a good idea and great gift~!

And I hear that, due to a local mom wanting to prevent BPA plastics from being Freecycled to the unsuspecting, local favorite Nature’s Child will possibly be offering a dumping bin for these evil critters…

In other ‘green’ news, I have, in my new house, started composting (trial #2). Here’s a colorful guide.
